I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll knock your house down

Catch up time. To kickstart my return to the blogging circuit I'll start by posting up some things I've done recently.

First up D9 bulldozer from SandSmodels in 20mm scale. It's not in the store yet. But I saw it on their Facebook page here. So when I placed an order for another item, asked Shaun about it and he kindly sent me out a model.

I've added cables for the hydraulics, grab handles, fire extinguishers, amber warning beacon and the aircon/heater unit for the cab. Built up some areas with plastic card. Added some card to the base of the blade to bulk it out more and around the cab deck. Then it was a case of weathering it....heavily.

I've painted it to represent a vehicle used by US forces. I could not figure how to make the grill which sits over the blade or to add the headlamps which sit above the two blade arms. Fortunately I did find a photo on the net, of two US Army D9's parked side by side and one was missing the grill above the blade.

Overall I'm pleased with the result. Had a bit of a 'mare with the painting though. Decided to try out MIG Ammo Scratches fluid in place of my normal hairspray. I learnt to my cost that you can't leave the chipping fluid overnight to dry like hairspray. So I ended up having to reapply a base coat. This means if you look closely some of the detail is covered a little to heavy in paint. Live and learn!

I didn't weather it heavy to hide these mistakes but to give it a real work horse look. Honest!:)

Anyway that's enough for now more to follow...

Pimp my ride!

A while back I posted about the first of several LAV-25's I intend to build. That post can be found here.

Now if you read yesterday's post (if not go and read it now :)), clearly visible in photo in the background is the very same LAV. For the past few days I've been 'enhancing' the model. I was just not entirely happy with it, and decided it needed further weathering.

So this is what it looked like originally...

Now this is the updated version...

I've added more dust and paint scratches primarily. This time I took more care by adding a layer of dust streaks for example, sealing with varnish and then adding another layer to build up the appearance.

I'm much happier with it's appearance now and I very much doubt I will tinker with it any more. Though I have made an error. Looking back at my source photo's the barrel of the Bushmaster cannon always seems to be black. I'll probably leave this one green and make sure I get it right next time.

Next I intend to 'pimp up' the T-72M1.

That's it for now more to follow soon.....

USMC Fireteam and BIG Bins

Finally completed another fireteam to represent USMC in MOPP gear.

These are once again from the excellent Elhiem range. I should now be able to field two full squads of USMC in NBC suits (part of). One more squad for a full platoon and then onto USMC/US Army in three colour camo DCU's.

Also added couple of terrain features. These are large waste/recycling bins.

These are from Hornby. Which I managed to pick up cheaply. Repainted and weathered them accordingly. To give an idea of size here they are next to a 20mm figure.

Should provide cover in those desperate firefights!

If you notice a slightly different green poking through on the green bin, perfectly reasonable explanation. The first colour I used I decided was not too my taste so I dabbed it off while still wet, with a old rag, trying not to remove the hairspray applied underneath to aid with the chipping effect. Not all the paint came off straight away So I was left with a mottled effect, which I quite liked and sprayed the new colour over the top. Then chipped away, which left the older colour showing through in parts. (Riveting wasn't it!?)

Thats it for now more to follow.....

LAV-25

The latest addition to support the USMC. A LAV-25 (LAV=Light Armoured Vehicle)*

*For a long time I thought it stood for Light Amphibious Vehicle

1/72nd scale Trumpter kit. Stowage is from Black Dog, CMK, 20mm Zone and home made.

That's it for now more to follow....

USMC for OIF

In between constructing tanks and buildings for my ongoing OIF project in 20mm, I have painted few figures.

First up the fireteams;

Each fireteam consists of a team leader (M16A2), rifleman (M16A2), grenadier with a M203 40mm grenade launcher (attached to the M16), and a light machine gunner with a M249 SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon). Three fireteams make a squad with a squad leader armed with a M16A2.

Command team;

This consists of from L to R; an RTO, sniper with an M40 rifle, Forward Observer and an officer.

and finally support weapons;

from L to R; Marine with pump action shotgun, M240G machine gunner, Marine with SMAW (Shoulder-launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon) a bunker buster/anti-tank (rocket) weapon, and a Marine with a FGM 148 Javelin, fire and forget anti tank missile launcher.

The figures are all from Elhiem Figures. These are from the Modern US Infantry in MOPP (Mission Oriented Protective Posture) (NBC) suits range. The last two photos are listed as described for the relevant figure pack.

I currently have one extra fireteam since Elhiem sell packs containing all SAW gunners, riflemen etc, so four packs will make four teams. They do have the option to purchase a complete fireteam but it will be pot luck with the figure variants/poses.

A complete squad;

The Marines wore the MOPP suits during the advance to Baghdad, which was supplied in the woodland camo scheme. I've taken a few liberties by painting all harnesses (MOLLE: Modular Lightweight Load Carrying Equipment) and some pouches in 'coyote brown'. I do not believe that this new colour for equipment was totally universal at the time, but it breaks up the colours on each figure and of course makes them more enjoyable to paint. These 20mm figures are very well detailed and a joy to paint.

So a squad and two thirds to go and I will have a platoon.

Thats it for now , more to follow.

M1A1 (HA) Abrams MBT

Revell 1/72 scale M1A1 (HA) Abrams MBT.

This was the first 'true' plastic kit I've built in about 25+ years. Too many painful memories of dropping the tiniest pieces into the carpet never to be seen again or glue everywhere, not just on the model, had put me off for a long while. But since my re-interest in 20mm again I decided to take the plunge, and this was the first kit which I purchased and built.

The Revell Abrams has good reviews, from those who know about 1/72 scale plastic kits, for its accuracy. Took about a week to build and quite frankly I really enjoyed it. Then spent about another week painting and weathering the kit.

Learnt quite a bit from this first build. Main learning curve being take your time and the whole process will be more enjoyable. The tracks on this kit are link and length. Which means it comes in hard plastic sections and some actual individual pieces to go around the drive and idler wheels. I did think it would be a nightmare but with trial and some error, I actually prefer this method for representing tracks than the soft plastic versions so lovingly remembered from building Airfix kits as a boy...happy days!

The stowage is mainly resin from CMK (Czech Master Kits). I'm not too sure if I've got the colours quite right on some of the stowage, so I intend to re-work some of it and maybe add some more. I drilled out the end of the gun barrel and drilled out the antenna 'attachments'(?). The antenna are plastic bristles cut from a floor handbrush.

It will be noticed I have not added any insignia. Partly because I do not like using decals and partly because I didn't believe it needed them. One item I would like to source are the Combat Identification Panels used on the Coalition vehicles. I believe the Revell M1A2 kit came with them but that kit is OOP at the moment.

The CIP can be seen on the rear of this M1A1.
The HA stands for Heavy Armour. No I didn't know that either until I had bought the kit and done some more research. The Heavy Armour in question is depleted uranium which increases protection but adds weight.

Overall a great kit, and I intend to build another one in the near future.

More too follow....

28 Minutes Later

The Setting

An Nasiriyah, Iraq, 23rd March 2003.

The Situation

The single squad from Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment having failed to reach the stricken Amtrac have consolidated their position and for nearly half an hour have kept the Fedayeen at bay. Unfortunately ammunition is running low and with two casualties themselves, time is running out to save the Amtrac crew from capture.

The Game

The ten remaining Marines occupy the defensive position. There very own Alamo.

Around them Fedayeen congregate. But accurate fire from the Marines have thinned their numbers.

Realising that staying put is not an option. One Marine fireteam moves out of cover in an attempt to reach the Amtrac. The remaining Marines use 'Overwatch' to protect their comrades.

Then the roar of a 1500hp gas turbine engine, added a new dimension to the battlefield.

The arrival of the M1A1 of Alpha Company, 8th Tank Battalion brought about a change in the Marine tactics. The survivors of the third team moved to link up with the tank. The intent being to use it to reach the Amtrac.

The insurgents began to gather. Reinforcements carrying RPG's being particularly welcome.

Unfortunately the attempt fails, and the Fedayeen lurking in the palm grove, attract the attention of the 68ton behemoth.

Meanwhile the fireteam who had literally sneaked out of the back door continue to move along the left flank.

Fedayeen occupy a strong position to stop the Marines outflanking move. It does not work and they are neutralised by Marine covering fire.

The Marines neutralise another 'Hotspot'. Thus gaining control of the left side of the street.

Having reached the tank. The depleted squad use it as cover to advance slowly towards the Amtrak.

Fedayeen continue to engage the Marines.

With the other two fireteams on high ground, they are able to quickly nullify the Fedayeen.

The M1A1 is able to reach the Amtrac and finally the crew is rescued.

Meanwhile at the southern end of the street, a fierce firefight has resulted in another Marine casualty; seriously wounded.

Despite inflicting a fourth casualty on the Marines, it is too little too late. The Fedayeen are either spread to thin or else forced to keep their heads down to limit casualties. The Marines command the battlefield.

Nothing can stop the Abrams and Marines reaching safety.

AAR

Marine victory. By successful neutralising the 'Hotspots' on the west side of the board, the USMC had virtually complete control of one half of the gaming area. The use of overwatch meant that the regulars were able to dominate. The Abrams was then able to advance with its left flank secure, plus act as a shield for the infantry.  The Fedayeen never had enough leaders or RPG's to effectively deal with the armour.

This game was a follow on from the last instalment. Initially the Marines had to decide how to rescue their trapped comrades, and care for their own casualties. Plus to add a bit of flavour I decided the Marines were low on ammo which was represented if they had poor supply, so -1 to firepower dice. The M1A1 was to be diced for at the beginning of each turn from the second onwards. Its arrival being decided on a successful TQ (Troop Quality) role. It arrived on the second turn. Though being a boon, it was also a bane. My opponent went out of his way to make sure that the tank was not lost during the engagement. The Marines on overwatch were able to lay down effective supporting fire, as the tank advanced. For myself I was trying to overcome the infantry and the tank. But the Marine fire was just too effective. So consequently as soon as I moved forces into position quite often they were being engaged by two Marine fireteams and then the Abrams and removed from play.

Overall another excellent game using the Force on Force rules.
